Starting a Business In Hawaiʻi: The Essentials -facilitated by Hawaiʻi SBDC, Maui Center
Designed for prospective and new business owners to bridge the gap between "dreaming" and "doing".

Navigating the path from "idea" to "open for business" can be complex. In this webinar, the Hawaiʻi SBDC provides a clear roadmap for prospective and new business owners. You'll learn:

  • The Foundation: What truly defines a business versus a hobby.
  • The Strategy: Essential planning steps to ensure viability and success.
  • The Compliance: Step-by-step guidance on registrations and permits required to legally conduct commerce in the Aloha State.

WHAT WE'LL COVER: **READINESS & PLANNING:** How to use the "Business Idea Checklist" to validate your concept and the essential planning required before you spend a dime. **CHOOSING A LEGAL STRUCTURE: ** An overview of your options—Sole Proprietorships, Partnerships, LLCs, and Corporations—to help you determine the best fit for your needs. **REGISTRATION ROADMAP:** Step-by-step instructions for: 1)registering your business structure or trade name with the DCCA, 2)obtaining your Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS, and, most importantly, 3)securing your General Excise Tax (GET) license (effectively your 'Hawaiʻi Business License'). **HAWAII TAX ESSENTIALS: ** Demystifying the General Excise Tax (GET). We will guide you through the Basic Business Application (Form BB-1), clarify how GE Tax differs from Income Tax (state vs. federal), and outline your separate obligations for self-employment tax.
